The Padres are in the postseason for the first time in fourteen years, with a loaded offense featuring Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Eric Hosmer and Wil Myers.

Yet, it was the strength of the pitching staff that got them here, including Dinelson Lamet and a late season trade of former Indians ace Mike Clevinger.

News broke yesterday that the Game One starter would be Chris Paddack, but it’s now confirmed that Clevinger and Lamet aren’t available whatsoever. The latter had his strongest year of his career in 2020, going 3-1 with a 2.09 ERA and 93 Ks. Lamet has right bicep tightness and has not taken a bullpen since sustaining the injury.

For Clevinger, who has right elbow impingement, has a 3.02 ERA with a 1-1 record and 40 Ks. He has a career 3.19 ERA, 603 Ks and 44-23 record in 105 games (92 starts).

These are big blows for the Padres, who will now likely have to start Zach Davies in Game 2 against the Cardinals.
