With Gerrit Cole battling COVID-19 the Yankees turned to 23 year old top pitching prospect Luis Gil. Their top prospect certainly did not disappoint in his Major League debut pitching; 6 innings, allowing 4 hits, 1 walk, allowing no earned runs, and striking out six batters.
In all seriousness Luis Gil looked impressive, I know it was against the Orioles but he certainly looked like an MLB starting pitcher. I do not know if Gil will be up for only the rest of the year or if he found himself a home in this rotation moving forward but I am certainly looking forward to whatever happens next.
Luis Gil became the first Yankee with 6+ IP, 0 runs, and 6+ K in his MLB debut since 1992. Good for Gil, it was also a great night for Brian Cashman and company to flex the strength and depth of their farm system. Long Live Luis Gil.
