Per Tim Cato of the Athletic, the Dallas Mavericks will not be playing the national anthem moving forward. The organization feels there is other ways they can express love for the country without the anthem, as they feel it doesn’t represent them. This news comes to a surprise to a lot of the public because it’s been a tradition for so long, but it has to be noted the Mavericks haven’t played the anthem this year yet. It seems those at the game noticed this change without warning as the decision was not announced to arena employees or team officials. It seems the Mavericks are the first American sports team to change the tradition in years.

Other NBA franchises were alerted of the change and nobody seemed to have any disagreements. The Mavericks are the only NBA franchise to make this change. Per Marc Stein of the New York Times, Cuban had this to say when asked about the decision.

“It was my decision, and I made it in November,”

Cuban then declined to comment further.
