Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz suffered a right ankle injury late in the fourth quarter yesterday in a loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Wentz was scrambling and was ultimately taking down by Aaron Donald, a Rams defensive linemen halfway through the fourth quarter. It was not pretty watching Went go down as his ankle twisted heavily. Went took his time getting to his feet and eventually limped off of the field. Colts head coach Frank Reich had the following to say on Wentz’s injury:

“He rolled it up pretty bad,” Reich said of Wentz’s right ankle injury. “It didn’t look good. And sometimes if you go back in right in while it’s still warm, you can maybe gut out a few more plays, but the longer we were off the field there, it just stiffened up.

“He tried, but there was no chance.

The assumption is that Wentz likely suffered a severe ankle injury. Went stated he has had several ankle sprains throughout his life, but he simply could not play on this one.

“Felt it right away. Tried to tape it up and do everything I could to finish the game,” Wentz said. “… I’ve sprained my ankle probably 100 times since I was a kid. This one I just couldn’t play on it.”

With Wentz’s status is unknown, rumors began circulating yesterday evening that Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay might be interested in bringing Cam Newton in as a replacement to Wentz if necessary. If Went’z ankle is broken if a ligament or tendon is torn, he could miss a large chunk if not the entirety of 2021 season. Currently, Cam Newton is the best free agent option available to start an NFL game. Currently, Wentz’s backup is Jacob Eason who played college football at Washington and Georgia and was drafted by the Colts in the fourth round (122nd pick) of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Would Cam Newton make for a good option in Indianapolis if Wentz is down and out for the foreseeable future? He certainly has the experience you want from a starting quarterback, and given what option the Colts currently have, they are going to need another health body even if they went to move forward with Eason as their starter. Only time will tell, but it is very possible we could see Newton end up taking snaps in Indy.
