In a year filled with so many unknowns, Dr. Duvernay-Tardif decided that he had to fulfill his calling to help those in need, instead of playing the game he loves. Now, on this Super Bowl Sunday, he reflected in this 4 1/2 minute video released on ESPN.

For anyone who doesn’t know who Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is by now (and you very much should), let me give you a quick rundown. Against all odds he was drafted in the 6th round out of McGill University in Canada, and made his way to become a full time starter in the NFL and securing a 42 million dollar contract in 2017.

All of that would be amazing in itself, it wasn’t for the fact that he was also becoming a world class physician in the meantime. According to his Wikipedia, he graduated from McGill University Faculty of Medicine in May 2018 with a Doctorate in Medicine. Oh, and he did that all in the off-season after playing in the NFL.

At the beginning of this season, he decided he would be best suited with his talents by foregoing millions of dollars to help work at an elderly care facility, which is all documented in the video above. This guy is an absolute saint amongst men, and the pinnacle of a person answering the call when they are needed. Absolutely gut wrenching as he described that he couldn’t be on the field with his teammates, to the point where he had a difficult time watching the games at first. Hard not to root for a guy like this, and I hope when the pandemic comes to a close, he continues on to another 40 million dollar contract. I believe ole’ Tony’s heart has grown a few sizes.
