The USC head coaching job is apparently the hot job right now in sports. It may have a target in mind.

With the departure of Clay Helton this week, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is being considered a top candidate for the job.

The 52-year-old Bieniemy is in his fourth season as the Chiefs head coach and has been Andy Reid’s top assistant who has had his fair share of interviews for NFL head coaching jobs.

But Bieniemy has stayed with Reid after every interview, although some have been wondering what Bieniemy has been waiting for. Maybe it’s a top-name college program like USC.

It wouldn’t even be his alma mater like a Jim Harbaugh to Michigan type move, as Bieniemy is from the University of Colorado. This kind of move would be finding a top assistant coach from the NFL and luring him back to the college scene.

Bieniemy was in the college scene, serving as Colorado’s running backs coach in 2001-2002 and again as their offensive coordinator in 2011-2012. He was also UCLA’s running backs coach from 2003-2009.

Bieniemy is the perfect guy for USC to target. As he knows the ways of the NFL scene and can give that experience and guidance to any young mind who may be ready to jump from college to the pros.

Replacing someone like Helton isn’t easy because he has ties to the school going back the last 12 years. But this isn’t replacing a legacy or a championship winning coach like Pete Carroll. This is doable.

Bieniemy can bring the Chiefs style of offense to the college game, prepare the Trojans players for life on the NFL and have them competing for championships every season.

Bieniemy has waited his time to be a head coach. instead of picking the wrong team in the NFL and getting demoted back to offensive coordinator, picking a solid college program and turning around USC would be a great way for Bieniemy to go.

Eric Bieniemy is the guy USC should hire as soon as possible.
