While everyone was focused on sports cancellations and the hype to Joe Biden’s vice presidential pick, here’s some news that was missed by a few major sources.

As mentioned in a YouTube video from Steven Crowder’s Mug Club, five-year-old Cannon Hinnant, of Wilson, North Carolina, was reported by multiple sources to be murdered at point-blank range by his neighbor just recently.

The assailant, 25-year-old Darius Nathaniel Sessoms, has been charged with first-degree murder and remains in custody of Wilson Police and the U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Task Force.

WSOC-TV of Charlotte reports that Wilson Police were dispatched to a call at a mobile home park Sunday evening and found the child lying with a gunshot wound in the head.

First responders and police offered first aid to Hinnant and transported him to a local hospital, where he passed.

Although there has been no reported motive, the police suspects that the shooting was no accident.

The family states that Cannon was playing outside at his father’s house, riding his bike just before the shooting occurred. His two older sisters, ages 7 and 8, witnessed their brother getting shot.

Another witness, Doris Lybrand, said that Sessoms walked to the boy, put the gun to his head, and shot Cannon before fleeing back to his house.

“My first reaction was he’s playing with the kids,” Lybrand said. “For a second, I thought, ‘That couldn’t happen.’ People don’t run across the street and kill kids.”

After the shooting occurred, Lybrand ran back into her house, locked the doors and dialed 911.

“You don’t expect to see somebody shoot someone,” Lybrand said.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help out the family. It is now over $30,000 out of their $5,000 goal.

Cannon was set to start kindergarten this past Monday.
