Astros’ ace Justin Verlander announced today that he will miss the entire 2021 season due to Tommy John Surgery. On his Instagram, the former AL MVP posted the following:

Verlander is in his fourth year with the Astros after 13 years as MLBs premiere pitcher with the Detroit Tigers. 2021 is the final year of his contract with the Astros. Verlander exited his first start this year, only throwing six innings a season after winning his second career AL Cy Young. He won the AL MVP in 2011 when he won the pitching Triple Crown. He has a 71.8 career WAR, 3013 Ks (in 2988 IP), a 3.33 ERA and a 226-129 record in 454 games. The 37 year old is an 8x All-Star and has finished top five in Cy Young voting eight times.

For the Astros, this is a huge blow, as they were banking on him coming back in time for the postseason. They still have Hall of Fame ace Zack Greinke, but after him it’s rather bleak. The team is playing .500 ball in the first year since their big scandal and is only a playoff team due to the new expanded playoffs. A year ago their rotation featured Verlander, Greinke and Gerrit Cole. Now, it looks like their window is closing. PSE will keep you updated on this story as it becomes available.
