After months of anticipation, the Mookie Betts saga is finally coming to a halt. The LA Dodgers, fresh off the loss of ace Hyun Jin Ryu and in need of one last impact bat fill both of their needs right before Spring Training.
According to Alex Speier of Boston Globe, the Dodgers could acquire the 2018 AL MVP and 2012 AL Cy Young (with Tampa Bay) tonight. Betts, a pending free agent, is one of the league’s premiere players. At only 27 years of age, Betts has a 42 lifetime WAR and a .301/.374/.519 slashline over first 6 years in the Majors. He’s been elected to four straight All-Star games, is a stellar defender with 4 straight gold glove awards in right field and has finished top 10 in MVP voting in each of the last 4 seasons. He has 126 stolen bases and is a 5 tool player. As for Price, his best days are behind him but he is still a viable option. He pitched to a mid 4 ERA in 2019, but going from the friendly confines of Fenway to the pitchers paradise of Chavez Ravine should do wonders. He has a lifetime 3.31 ERA with 1981 Ks, a 150-80 record and 1.153 lifetime WHIP between Tampa Bay, Detroit, Toronto and Boston. He has a 39.7 lifetime WAR. Price, however, $96M over the next 3 years. The 5x All-Star has never pitched for an NL team.
ESPNs Jeff Passan is reporting the deal is finalized, and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Alex Verdugo is the main piece going to Boston. Alex Verdugo before his breakout 2019 was a consensus top 5 prospect. He hit .294, with 12 HR and an .817 OPS in 2019. Rosenthal is also reporting that the vaunted “mystery team” is a third team in the blockbuster. Rumors are rampant top prospect Jeter Downs is also going to Beantown.
UPDATE: The third team involved is the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Pederson, an All-Star in 2015, hit 36 homeruns for the Dodgers in 2019. He has a lifetime .813 OPS.
UPDATE: ESPNs Jeff Passan is refuting the claim by Rosenthal, stating that the Minnesota Twins are the third team. Bob Nightengale of USAToday is reporting that Kenta Maeda is in the trade. Maeda has a 3.87 ERA in 4 big league seasons, all with LAD. MLB.coms Mark Feinsand is reporting top Dodger prospect Dustin May is NOT involved.
UPDATE: Jon Heyman has confirmed the third team is in fact the Twins. Angels deal for Joc Pederson could be separate.
UPDATE: Kenta Maeda according to Ken Rosenthal is a Minnesota Twin. The Twins will be sending top prospect Brusdar Graterol to Boston. The top 10 pitching prospect for the Twins tops over 100 on the radar gun and has seen Major League playing time already.
UPDATE: The Angels and Dodgers have agreed on a separate trade that is sending Joc Pederson to Anaheim for Luis Rengifo, a 22 year old 2B who played 108 games in the big leagues in 2019.
