The Atlanta Braves made a significant change for their fans towards their signature foam Tomahawk Chops, as the team has removed them from the stadium.

TMZ Sports reported that the change was made after St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Ryan Helsley, who is a member of the Cherokee tribe, commented on the foam tomahawks saying it was ‘insulting’ and ‘misrepresented Native Americans.’

Helsley spoke about it in an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“It just depicts them in this kind of caveman-type people way who aren’t intellectual,” Helsley said.

“They are a lot more than that. It’s not me being offended by the whole mascot thing. It’s not. It’s about the misconception of us, the Native Americans, and it devalues us and how we’re perceived in that way, or used as mascots.”

The Braves heard the comments and immediately removed them from their handouts on route to their Game 5 tonight at SunTrust Park.

Down below is the official statement from the team via a tweet from Mark Saxon.

“We look forward to a continued dialogue with those in the Native American community after the postseason concludes,” the team also said.
