The 2019 Stanley Cup Finals matchup has been set and it will be a rematch 49 years in the making.

After being ranked dead last in the league back in January and finding success from rookie goaltender Jordan Binnington and interim head coach Craig Berube, the St. Louis Blues continue their turnaround as they dominated Game 6 over the San Jose Sharks to clinch the Western Conference championship, 5-1, on route to facing the Eastern Conference champions, the Boston Bruins in this year’s Stanley Cup Finals.

Both Boston and St. Louis have met in the Final all the way back in 1970 (the site of the famous Bobby Orr goal).

It didn’t take long for St. Louis to get the scoring underway as David Perron deflected the puck from a Sammy Blais shot to make it 1-0.

The Blues continued their hot start as Vladimir Tarasenko sniped a power play goal past San Jose goaltender Martin Jones to make it 2-0 going to the first intermission.

Even with the loss of captain Joe Pavelski, Erik Karlsson, Tomas Hertl, and Timo Meier, the Sharks found the scoring column in the second period as Dylan Gambrell notched his first career NHL goal cut the Blues lead in half.

But it would take St. Louis six minutes to extend their lead to 3-1 as Brayden Schenn notched a goal past Jones.

The third period would see the eventual game-sealing goals as Tyler Bozak made it 4-1 Blues on a goal during a three-on-two breakaway with just under seven minutes remaining in the game.

An empty-net goal by Ivan Barbashev at two minutes remaining would wrap up Game 6 in which propelled St. Louis to their first Finals series in nearly 50 years.

Binnington recorded 25 saves on 26 shots, while Jones struggled all game in net, stopping 14 out of 18 shots on-goal.

St. Louis will begin their quest for their first Stanley Cup title this upcoming Monday (Memorial Day) as they take on the Boston Bruins.

The Bruins are coming off a four-game sweep over the Carolina Hurricanes.

The faceoff between the two teams is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in Boston.
