Just hours after signing George Springer to the largest contract in franchise history, they’ve inked his teammate Michael Brantley. Brantley, a four time All-Star, was the player to be named later in the trade that sent CC Sabathia to the Brewers. Ever since, he’s been a superstar caliber player.

Since his MLB debut in 2009, Brantley has posted a 30.4 bWAR to coincide with a robust .297/.354/.476 and 114 homeruns in 1245 games. He has a 116 lifetime OPS+. Brantley will offer not only a lefty bat, but patience to a young Blue Jays squad. Over 194 games as an Astro, he K’d only 94 times. Brantley works the count, gives occasional pop and has excellent hand-eye coordination. It’s likely that he’ll see a majority of his playing time as the desginated hitter, with Teoscar Hernandez, George Springer and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. filling out the outfield. Brantley’s also 34 years of age and was never a stellar defender even in his prime, so it’s unlikely he’d grade well in the field going forward.

This will keep Brantley in Toronto through his age 37 season. The monetary value of the contract isn’t currently known. PSE will keep you updated as information becomes available.

UPDATE:

ESPNs Jeff Passan is denying the report of Brantley signing with Toronto.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal has issued a retraction and apology regarding the premature report of the agreement.
