When I was originally listening to this game, I thought I was going to have to make the title of this blog a famous John Tortorella quote: “We sucked. And we sucked at a time you can’t suck”.

Thankfully, with 7:21 left in the game, the Blue Jackets started one of the greatest comebacks in all of hockey this season.

On Sunday night, the Vancouver Canucks took on the Columbus Blue Jackets in Columbus. When this game first started, it seemed like it was going to be a game fully dominated by the Canucks.

The Canucks started things off just a minute into the game. On an early power play, Bo Horvat scored on a tip in goal, and gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead. This was immediately looking like another doomed game for the Jackets.

Later on in the period at the 12:53 mark, Canucks Tyler Myers took a long shot that was deflected in by Elias Pettersson for the goal that put them up 2-0 early in the contest.

After the quick goals by the Canucks, it was the Jackets turn. Halfway through the first period, Jackets Kevin Stenlund hit one in at point blank range off of a rebound. This made the score 2-1, and gave the team some momentum.

This momentum would not carry into the second period however, as the Canucks would score another quick goal to start the frame.

Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller would take advantage of the Jackets dog shit defense, as Pettersson set up Miller for a wide open clapper that ripped by Jackets goaltender, Joonas Korpisalo. This put them up 3-1.

Another goal wouldn’t be scored until there was just 7:21 left in the game, where the Blue Jackets pulled off one of the greatest comebacks this season, if not, the best comeback this season.

Riley Nash would start the rally. On a cross ice pass from Ryan Murray, Nash took a quick wrist shot that went top shelf and in. This had the Jackets back within one, with a 3-2 score.

The Jackets would then go on the power play, and do something it seems like they never do, which is score while the opposing team is short handed. And the most beautiful thing happened after they scored….they scored again.

Zach Werenski scored first, ripping a clapper from the top of the zone that went screaming past the goaltender so fast, he literally looked confused as to how it got by him.

The Jackets now tied things up at 3-3. At this point everyone was thinking overtime again, like how it has been recently. But Emil Bemstrom said “NO”!!!! He scores to put the team up 4-3, and the Jackets had just 1:37 until they finally got a win.

What’s funny about the Emil Bemstrom goal is that it almost looked like it got tipped by a Cancucks defeseman, and if it didn’t get tipped, it may have been blocked. (Go to the 8 second mark of the video)

In the last 1:37, all the Jackets had to do was play solid defense, clear the puck every chance they had, basically just do everything in their power to not allow goal. So what did they do? Scored an empty netter!!!

Listen, I’m not one who will ever get mad at an empty netter. Pad the hell out of those stats, boys!

With just 11 seconds left in the game, Gustav Nyquist, who was actually being defended by 3 different Canucks, managed to get a last second shot in and put the Jackets up 5-3, sealing the win for his team.

Unfortunately, I was at my job when this game was going on, and had to settle with the ol’ bluetooth earbud with the game on while I drove around on a forklift all night. With that being said, this game made my night a hell of a lot better than what I thought it was going to be.

Now that I’ve had some time to think about it, I wonder what my coworkers were thinking when they saw this running around the warehouse:

Yes, I get so excited for these Muppets on the Jackets right now, I went sprinting around like a damn Muppet myself when they got the win, probably violating several OSHA regulations.
