After going 0-3-4 in their last seven games, the Columbus Blue Jackets finally got a much needed win against the Ottawa Senators. This win put them back into the second wild card spot.
The game started off quickly. Just 4:10 into the first period, Jackets Nick Foligno got things kicked off with the first goal of the game, putting the Jackets up 1-0.
Just six minutes later, the Senators answered right back with a Connor Brown goal, tying the game at 1-1.
In the second period, Connor Brown put his second goal of the night on the board, giving Ottawa a 2-1 lead. That’s when the injury bug bit the Jackets once again.
While attempting a tuck on a fast break, Senators, Anthony Duclair went flying into Elvis Merzlikins, kneeing him in the head, then causing him to fall back into the pipe, and hit his head again. Merzlikins would leave the game.
Thankfully for the Jackets, goaltender, Joonas Korpisalo literally just came back from injury. This was his first game back after being injured in a shootout against the Blackhawks on December 29th.
Nick Foligno would then avenge his fallen teammate, by tying the game up with is second goal of the game, making things 2-2 just over halfway through the second period.
Then next goal wouldn’t come till halfway through the third period, when Senators, Colin White would score and give them a 3-2 lead.
The Jackets would immediately answer back. Just 29 seconds later, Stefan Matteau scored his second goal with the Blue Jackets organization, tying the game back up at 3-3.
This game would, of course, head into overtime. Jackets fans were getting nervous when their team was just 25 seconds away from going to their second consecutive shootout. Then, Emil Bemstrom scored the game winning goal off of a rebound from a Zach Werenski shot.
I also would like to show you one of my favorite parts of this organization, and it’s their social media team.
They always make a post like this after a Jackets win, and they are always funny and exciting to see.
The Jackets look to go back to back on Tuesday with their new, trade deadline acquisition, Devin Shore, against the Minnesota Wild in Minnesota.
