The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many businesses to close temporarily or even permanently. Movie theaters are one of those businesses. With how close you sit to other people, it’s a no doubter that they would be closed. We all thought they’d be back eventually, but will they?

Warner Bros. has announced that they will release all of their 2021 movies simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max.

This means highly anticipated movies like Matrix 4, Dune, Space Jam 2, Suicide Squad, Godzilla vs. Kong, and many more will be released directly onto HBO’s streaming service on the day they are released in theaters.

Which begs the question, will this become a trend for the competitive streaming service market? and will the movie theater industry be able to survive this kind of move?

HBO Max costs $15/month with a huge variety of movies and shows that can be watched at any time of the day, in the comfort of your own home. Just seeing one movie at a movie theaters can cost more than that! Who would want to pay $15 to go see a movie in theaters when you can spend $15 to watch the movie, plus many others, all month long right at home.

I think this might be the starting point for other streaming services to compete for the rights to release movies on their platform. It will inevitably hurt the movie theater industry if they can’t lower ticket prices.
