Last season was tough for the Detroit Lions as newly acquired head coach Matt Patricia took over the team and not everything went well.
Right off the bat certain media members started trashing Patricia and the way he coaches, not even giving him a chance… Something that Detroit media seems to enjoy.
Although Detroit had a tough season finishing 6-10, the team had a couple positives in wins over Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, two wins over Green Bay – including 31-0 in Green Bay.
Detroit also brought in the best DT in the NFL in Damon “Snacks” Harrison, a move that has already paid off for Detroit.
Now, enough about talking about last season. Let’s jump into the FIVE season why Detroit WILL in fact make the playoffs this season.
5. Kerryon Johnson (The entire backfield) and Darrell Bevell
The Detroit Lions finally have a stud running back; it’s been a minute. Kerryon Johnson had a hell of a rookie season – and although he’ll have to learn a new playbook under new offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, this will be something that’ll improve Johnson’s all around game. The hire of Darrell Bevell might be the most underrated move of the offseason.
Now that isn’t all folks, the entire Detroit Lions backfield has improved. With the addition of C.J Anderson, and Ty Johnson the Detroit backfield has opened up.
4. T.J Hockenson and Jesse James
The Detroit Lions tight end situation is finally in place! In his two seasons at Iowa, T.J Hockenson had 73 receptions for 1,080 yards and nine touchdowns.
This is a huge addition for Matt Stafford and that isn’t even mentioning the addition of Jesse James who is a reliable tight end as well.
3. Weapons On The Outside For Stafford
The Detroit Lions have weapons on the outside at wide receiver, although the team had to trade Golden Tate last season Matt Stafford still has weapons around him.
Danny Amendola – Danny is the grit behind this crew. The addition of the hardworking Super Bowl champion was a big move for Detroit.
Detroit has other weapons in depth with TommyLee Lewis and Brandon Powell. Andy Jones also showed some promise during the end of last season.
2. Matt Stafford’s Chip On His Back
Matthew Stafford is an elite quarterback, and this season will be the best of his career. I truly believe out of everyone in Detroit, Stafford has the biggest chip on his shoulder.
Stafford has been titled “The comeback kid”… But I think if you ask Stafford he’d rather be ahead the entire game. Stafford has been criticized by the media his entire career and I believe this chip on his shoulder and all the other key pieces falling in line with Detroit will help Detroit win a playoff game.
And let’s not forget… Stafford had to deal with the news of his wife Kelly this offseason which was tough for him, and I believe it put’s more of a chip on his shoulder as well.
1. Matt Patricia and The Detroit Lions Defense
Everyone thought that Matt Patricia was too tough on his team and that he was trying to run everything “his way” well… Let’s buy into it for once, eh? It’s sickening. We have a guy whose been apart of Super Bowl in New England, let’s follow his method… Please?
The Detroit Lions defense has studs with the best cornerback in the league in Darius “Big Play” Slay and a stud in Quandre Diggs. Also look for big numbers from Jarrad Davis, and rookie Jahlani Tavai.
Trey Flowers and Justin Coleman were two huge additions for Detroit that add experience, grit, and two guys who don’t quit on their teams.
Also expect Tracey Walker to be a name you’ll hear, and who’ll have one big impact.
These are five of the reasons that Detroit will make the playoffs this season. I’m almost to 5K followers on Twitter, drop a follow!
