A tragic accident occurred at a beach area along Lake Superior earlier Friday as an 11-year-old boy has died after a sand dune embankment collapsed on him and became unresponsive afterwards.

Allissa Pietila of WLUC TV 6 said in a post that the boy was digging in a sand dune at a beach area at AuTrain Township and the embankment collapsed down on him.

Michigan State Police Post-Negaunee (MSP) said that their troopers made attempts to save the boy, but they were unsuccessful.

The boy, who’s name has not been released to the public, was transferred to the Munising Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Pietila states that the boy and his family were visiting from out of the area.

Assisting the MSP were Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Autrain Township Fire Department, Alger County Sheriff’s Office, and Alger County EMS.
