The Rays are first place in the AL East heading into this weekend’s series against the second place New York Yankees. A large part of that is their stellar pitching staff, anchored by emerging ace Tyler Glasnow, who entered the night the owner of a 1.47 season ERA (best in baseball) with a 6-0 record and 46 strikeouts over 43 frames.

The lanky 6’8 pitcher was acquired by Tampa Bay last year from the Pirates in the trade that sent Chris Archer to the Steel City

Nicknamed “Glasnasty”, he started off shaky against the Bronx Bombers who got out to a 2-0 start in the first, before the Rays ended up taking the lead on a Ji-Man Choi homerun. Following this, however, Glasnow took the mound in the 6th inning and recorded his ninth strikeout on his absolutely filthy curveball. Unfortunately for the Rays, as soon as the pitch was thrown Glasnow motioned for the trainer and took himself out of the game in obvious pain.

Twitter’s been jumping ever since, with worst case scenario in mind. Not quite worst-case-scenario, however, for the Rays, because a guy with Glasnow’s make-up is a prime candidate for Tommy John surgery; Juan Toribo has confirmed that he left with forearm tightness.

The Rays have announced that the young righty will undergo further evaluation tomorrow as they hope for the best.

PSE will keep you updated on his condition.
