Shawne Merriman Calls it Quits

Merriman has decided to retire after eight seasons as a premiere pass rusher. The pass rusher, who is famous for his “lights out” sack dance, posted on his website Tuesday that he has decided to retire now to be able to leave the game on his own terms. His first few seasons with the Chargers were amazing earning him defensive rookie of the year in 2005. His 2008 season was cut very short by injury.

He later said on his website that “I retire today not because I don’t feel I can go out there and still play the game at a very high level, I am retiring because I want to retire on my own terms and leave while I know I can still play the game,” (Direct quote). His injuries were beginning to haunt him, so it is quite possible he is not letting on to how hurt he is.

This warrior of the NFL was a great piece to the Chargers and Bills, and will forever be missed and remembered by his fans. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent March 12, but now we will likely never see his sack dance on the field again. Have a great life Shawne Merriman we hope to see you in the NFL somewhere, someday soon. He would certainty make a great assistant coach. We will see.
