Referee Screws U.P School Iron Mountain Out Of State Championship

What can I say? Michigan High School Athletic Association should be ashamed after watching this game. It doesn’t matter if it’s high school, college, or the pro’s. Iron Mountain Mountaineers just got screwed out of a State Title. On top of that they drove roughly 500 miles there to get screwed out of a title. Imagine that ride back? Knowing you got robbed out of changing your schools history? I’m not going to recap this game, let’s just jump into two plays that decided the game.

So first off as Iron Mountain has a one point lead… They’re about to score… And… they called this travel call. How is this a travel? This is the most proper way to do a layup. (Iron Mountain would be up by 3)

Another look..

So now… Instead of being up 3, Iron Mountain was up by 1 and Pewamo would get the ball underneath. Iron Mountain had a foul to give…. So they foul and instead of calling a common foul, they called an intentional foul so Pewamo-Westphalia got to shoot two free throws… For the win.. These two calls both happened with under 5 seconds left. Two calls in a row.

Let’s not take away from the great game or anything referee(s) – Way to make it the game about you, and not about the game. Iron Mountain should have let them shoot the half court shot in my opinion. But a common foul, would be foul to give. And Iron Mountain would have been State Champions.

Iron Mountain should be State Champions. On the other side, Iron Mountain is a young team, but for those seniors, they’ll more than likely never have a shot at another opportunity to win a championship.

And for the people that are saying “Oh, they should have played better in the fourth” and “scored more points” come on… You’re joking.. You can’t be serious… No matter what team it is, they got robbed from a State Title..

Here is coach Bucky Johnson after the game…. If I was him, that table might have been flipped.

LEAVE YOUR THOUGHTS IN THE COMMENTS BELOW…

    It was a great game to watch. It’s too bad that iron Mountain has to come back all that way empty handed because of two bad calls. We all know who is the more deserving team. I guess that was the only way pw had a chance was to call the intentional. What a shame. You can’t make this stuff up. In the end, we’ll probably get another shot next year. The graduating players are the ones who are going to feel the worst about it.

    Wow, Trevor, you’re a super professional reporter. Great headline. Whine much? I was at the game. Iron Mountain should have slowed the pace of the game when they were up by 8 points in the 4th quarter. But they didn’t and weree out-coached. The P-W player still had to make 2 clutch free throws for the win, the ref didn’t do it for him. How about going to journalism school and learning how to write an objective article?

      Congrats for being at the game. Don’t care. I think anyone who watched what happened know that Iron Mountain was robbed. I’m not a “professional reporter”, I’m a blogger. Better job that you’ve got, loser.

        The onlyt losers here are you and Iron Mountain, I’m not sure which one is bigger, lol. Have a great night whining about the game, I’ll be celebrating a victory!

          A victory that shouldn’t have happened. They played a good game, yes. Iron Mountain did as well. Just happens the referee decided to screw over one team instead of the other. Enjoy your victory. Should have a * by it.

    It was a travel. That’s not the ref taking it away–it’s that player being unable to put the ball on the floor.

      You know I can see that your IP address is the same one from your last comment under a different username? A travel? That’s the most proper form of a layup. Should have been an AND 1.

        That wasn’t a travel. Not even close. I have no dog in this fight, but that official made two calls in the final seconds that stole the game from IM.

        Never, ever should a referee decide a game, especially a state championship.

        PW’s victory is tainted. That referee should never work a championship or semi-final again.

        Just awful. The worst thing I’ve ever seen in Michigan high school basketball, and I’ve been following it for 50 years.

    Thank you for writing this article🙏🏽 I’m a high schooler at IM and I found this article as I’m driving home and will get in at about 2 am. I don’t understand how anyone who is not blind call that a travel, it was a 2 step layup put up with his left hand. Perfect form. And Marcus shouldn’t have fouled him but hey the kid was breaking him down and what’s a common foul, well it was quickly called an intentional foul because Pewamos coach was screaming for it. I really hope that those refs feel ashamed of themselves. Such awful calls. With 2 equally matched teams it’s just infuriating for it to be decided by the refs. Oh and Dirtgrain, watch the replays. If u think that’s a travel than u don’t know basketball.

      Preach it bro! Be sure to share this blog. Y’all got screwed completely. And if you slow it down almost looks like he took one step. Either way, not a travel.

  5. Christopher Walker

    March 16, 2019 at 11:28 pm

    Sorry, he puts the pivot foot down before releasing the ball. That is a travel. (The right foot is the pivot as it is the first foot to land after he catches the ball. The player picks it up and puts it down without dribbling).

    The intentional foul is iffy, but it looks like the defender grabs him around the waist specifically to impede progress, which might be considered “Contact that is not a legitimate attempt to play the ball/player specifically designed to stop the clock or keep it from starting.” Not clear cut, but also not obviously wrong.

    I know it stinks to lose close games, but let’s take it easy on the refs. They have a hard job.

    Section 72. Traveling[1]

    Art. 1. A player who catches the ball with both feet on the playing court may pivot, using either foot.

    Art. 2. A player who catches the ball while moving or dribbling may stop and establish a pivot foot as follows:

    a. When both feet are off the playing court and the player lands:
    1. Simultaneously on both feet, either may be the pivot foot;
    2. On one foot followed by the other, the first foot to touch shall be the pivot foot;
    3. On one foot, the player may jump off that foot and simultaneously land on both; neither foot can be the pivot foot.
    b. When one foot is on the playing court:
    1. That foot shall be the pivot foot when the other foot touches in a step;
    2. The player may jump off that foot and simultaneously land on both; neither foot can then be the pivot foot.
    Art. 3. After coming to a stop and establishing the pivot foot:

    a. The pivot foot may be lifted, but not returned to the playing court, before the ball is released on a pass or try for goal;64 Rule 4 / definitions
    b. The pivot foot shall not be lifted before the ball is released to start a dribble.
    Art. 4. After coming to a stop when neither foot can be the pivot foot:

    a. One or both feet may be lifted, but may not be returned to the playing court, before the ball is released on a pass or try for goal;
    b. Neither foot shall be lifted, before the ball is released, to start a dribble.
    Art. 5. It is traveling when a player falls to the playing court while holding the ball without maintaining a pivot foot.

    ART. 3

    An intentional foul is a personal or technical foul that may or may not be premeditated and is not based solely on the severity of the act. Intentional fouls include, but are not limited to:

    a. Contact that neutralizes an opponent’s obvious advantageous position.

    b. Contact away from the ball with an opponent who is clearly not involved with a play.

    c. Contact that is not a legitimate attempt to play the ball/player specifically designed to stop the clock or keep it from starting.

    d. Excessive contact with an opponent while the ball is live or until an airborne shooter returns to the floor.

    e. Contact with a thrower-in as in 9-2-10 Penalty 4.

      March 16, 2019 at 11:51 pm

      Left foot first, then right, layup. It’s a layup. Right foot was off the ground by mere inches but yes he was in the process of shuffling/running not standing. The defender was going around the player to try to get the ball and this foul was no different than the other 2 fouls that were called against Pewamo-Westphalia as common fouls in the last few min.

    • Dan Hestermann

      March 18, 2019 at 6:12 pm

      I think Christopher is just riling people up. It wasn’t a travel. Not sure how he sees feet off the ground when catching the ball. And there is something to be said about attempting to split hairs, especially in crunch time. And with the trail coming in from 50 feet? Trust your partners on a play like that. This is a good example of “how not to” officiate. I’m fine with the intentional foul call. The defense needed to do a cleaner job if fouling at that point.

    Everyone knows Iron Mountain won this game! Sue and Christopher must be from the other team or related to the ref but obviously they are special!! Great article by the way, everyone but PW and that total moron of a ref agrees.

      Everyone knows P-W won the game because they did. It would be nice if the IM fans could have some class and be gracious in defeat. I’m sure the P-W kids would be (and the coach) if the tables were turned. Go make some whine with your sour grapes, while P-W enjoys their championship

    “Trevstone” or Trevor Uren you are a complete moron!
    Imagine your mistakes at work being pasted all over FB. No wonder there is a lack of officials for ALL sports and it’s declining by year, due to a-holes like you.
    First, the travel was called by the African American referee which was definitely INCORRECT. But Trevor shows his bias toward the referees by saying the same referee called both plays. In fact, if he would have taken off his “Iron Mountain glasses” you would have noticed that a Caucasian referee called the intentional foul WHICH WAS THE CORRECT CALL! (If you don’t like the rule change it, but that was a classic intentional foul).
    Imagine ol’ Trev’s obvious bias in writing and botched assessment of the intentional foul being spread all over websites and criticized.
    Although unfortunate, I’m sure the one travel call (which WAS A BAD screwup) was not the ONLY reason “your team” lost…A$$HOLE!!!
    #hackreporter

    UPDATE…Just for the record #hackreporter … The refs called TWO fouls on “your team” in the 2nd half of the game. They called NINE fouls on the other team.
    “Your team” was up by EIGHT points with 2:46 remaining in the game.

        March 17, 2019 at 1:31 pm

        That’s seems to be the issue #hackreporter. The intentional foul was CORRECT, so the refs didn’t cost “your team” the game. I would suggest that IF THEY DIDN’T call that an intentional foul, they would have cheated for “your team”. At what point of grabbing a player from behind on the waist is NOT an intentional foul? Further, you can’t be serious that the VERY BAD travel call was the deciding factor in the game when the refs called 7 more fouls on the other team, “your team” was up by 8 with 2:46 remaining, and “your team” missed all those FTs.
        You and people like you are the reason of the decline of available referees for EVERY sport. If “your team” loses, it’s always the referees that were to blame. It couldn’t have been the team not “protecting” the 8 point lead! It couldn’t have been the coach’s lack of informing / teaching that when fouling, you must make an attempt at the ball and CAN’T grab the player around the waist.
        And just for the record, I haven’t even heard of @your team” or the other team before, so I no allegiance.

            I’ve not once been to an Iron Mountain basketball game in my life. I am from LAnse. Lanse and Iron Mountain never play. Did this year, I didn’t go. I just know what I seen, and so does 99.9% of Michigan. One team traveled 500 miles to have a game won taken from underneath them. I’m glad you went to my Facebook page. #UPPower

    If they had called it a basket and not a travel CORRECTLY it would have been a completely different ball game. We would’ve been up by 3 and then Marcus would’ve fouled to prevent the basket like he was doing as every other player in that situation would’ve done to give free throws and get the ball to win. And the intentional foul was very similar to the Pewamos last few intentional fouls that yes we missed our free throws too. It’s just sad that the people of Pewamo can believe that this is a genuine win and not what 99% of Michigan know it to be. The worst referee mistake in MHSAA history.
