So for the past three seasons, players have been diving into PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and conking each other over the head with frying pans and fighting for survival with no general basis or real reason why, just for the sake of winning a chicken dinner. But that changes next week, as the game appears to have a story – though how players will kind of adapt to it has yet to be seen.

The debut trailer for the season can be seen below. In it, a character provides some narrative, explaining how the world was falling apart on him back in 1965. During that time, war was happening, and he pretty much lost everything that was dear to him – including those he loved.

Fast forward several years. Apparently, the boy has grown up to become a man. A bitter, angry man. And as a result, he now wants to teach whoever he’s talking to the meaning of survival. So…he put together the Battle Royale?

The exact terms of the survival story have yet to be revealed. But it sounds like the boy-turned-man is the mastermind behind the whole thing, and it’s up to the players in the game to unravel whatever it is he has in mind. Whether he will offer a chicken dinner or something like that has yet to be seen, or whether the game’s tone will change is also up in the air. Your guess is as good as ours.

The season will kick off on July 24, next week, with the latest update for the game. We’ll have to see if players dive in or not. But thus far, the trailer has a solid reception, with over 44,000 likes on YouTube compared to less than 1,000 dislikes. So maybe people are digging this…? We’ll have to see if it can stick the landing.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
