Pittsburgh Penguins to bring back Jordan Staal?

Carolina Hurricanes v New Jersey Devils

The Pittsburgh Penguins are interested in bringing back center Jordan Staal, according to sources who told Pittsburgh’s Trib Total Media.

This move would more than likely not take place until after the season. However, the Penguins have inquired about what it would take to bring Staal back to Pittsburgh before the March 2nd trade deadline. This deal would be highly unlikely because of the Penguins significant salary, which is less than $1 million under the $69 million salary cap.

Staal signed a 10-year, $60 million contract after being traded by the Penguins to the Carolina Hurricanes in 2012. Current Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford signed Staal to the deal just days after acquiring him from Pittsburgh. Rutherford sent Pittsburgh center Brandon Sutter, defense-man Brian Dumoulin, and the 8th overall pick in the 2012 NHL draft.

Rutherford said that he was interested in bringing Staal to Pittsburgh a few days ago to Pittsburgh’s Trib Total Media. Staal has a no trade clause in his contract he signed in 2012, but Staal said that if he was able to come back to Pittsburgh he would forgo the clause. Staal wanted to go to Carolina to play with his brother Eric, but it looks like both Staal brothers are going to be on the move after this season.

Reacquiring Staal would reunite the trio of centers of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Jordan Staal. This trio led the Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup victory.

The Penguins should try whatever they can to acquire Staal before the trade deadline or in the off-season. Staal’s production has dipped significantly in the 3 years he has been in Carolina from his amazing production in Pittsburgh. Staal would fit perfectly right back in with the other 2 stars in Pittsburgh.

I always loved the way Staal played, and I think it would be pretty awesome to bring Staal back to Pittsburgh to make a run at another Stanley Cup.
