The Pittsburgh Penguins took on the Washington Capitals tonight and fell 3-1 in Pittsburgh. The game was tied going into the 3rd period but the Capitals capitalized on the Penguins stupidity. Half way through the 3rd, Alex Ovechkin tripped Kris Letang and Letang crashed into the boards. No penalty was called on the play, and the Penguins didn’t like that — things got chippy.

The Penguins led the stat sheet with 50 hits, but lacked in self control. The Penguins gave away 8 penalties in the 3rd period alone. This stupidity gave Washington the edge they needed to win. The Penguins spent the entire 3rd period trying to make up for the dirty trip against Letang, which got out of hand. We gave Washington too many chances with a man advantage.

The Penguins cost themselves the game with their pure idiotic play. It is just frustrating to watch, as a fan, the game slip through your teams’ hands because they aren’t playing smart.

With this loss, the Capitals come within 1 point of the Pens. The Penguins are currently 5th in the East sitting at 73 points, and Washington is 7th in the East at 72 points. The Penguins have lost 3 of their last 5 games, which has led to the Penguins falling behind by 4 points to Islanders for the lead in the Metropolitan division.

The Penguins need to play smarter hockey if they want to have home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. They are playing physical, smash mouth hockey, but you can’t just go hitting people just because you want to. You need to play physical yet smart when you hit the opponent, and the Penguins are not doing that right now, which is costing them big time.
