Pau Gasol Is Untradable
- Updated: November 19, 2012
Here are some reasons Pau Gasol is untradable. The Lakers were a first round exit 2 years in a row before the Pau Gasol trade in February 2008. The Lakers were a big piece away from being a championship contender. Andrew Bynum’s knee injury forced the Lakers hand to make this move. What a move it was, Mitch Kupchak pulled off one of the best trades in Lakers history acquiring the versatile Power Forward from the Memphis Grizzles for his brother Marc Gasol and Kwame Brown. What looked like a mismatch deal at the time has evened out. Marc Gasol has been just as good as his brother.
When Pau arrived in LA, it set the city of Los Angeles on fire. It brought out the Hispanic Fans in force. You don’t want to alienate that fan base. It’s a player they can relate to and really get behind. It brought instant championship aspirations and helped Kobe win his 1st and only MVP Award. Pau Gasol made a seamless transition to the triangle. Kobe and Gasol had instant chemistry together. There aren’t too many big men that have his skill set. He has an excellent mid range game, excellent post moves to either hand and he is a great free throw shooter.
In the 2008 Finals he got pushed around by Garnett and Perkins, but that doesn’t condemn him as a player, he is who he is. Plus he was out of position he is a natural Power Forward not Center. The next 2 years the Lakers captured back to back titles, beating Orlando in 5 and a rematch in an epic 7 game series against Boston. The Lakers do not sniff the Finals without Pau Gasol. He was the missing piece to the puzzle. Kobe has already backed keeping Gasol until his contract is up in 2 seasons. If Kobe wants this man on the team, why shouldn’t Lakers fans. So what he maybe soft in some peoples eyes. Gasol has been a constant 19 point and 10 rebound average his whole career. You can’t be soft putting up those kind of numbers. He just recently scored his 15,000th career point.
Mike D’Antoni’s system is a perfect fit for him as well. The Lakers have scored 235 points in their last 2 games with no Nash. You team Gasol with Nash when he returns with Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace and the best Center in the Game in Dwight Howard, this Lakers squad is scary. You add Antawn Jamison, Jodie Meeks, Steve Blake, and a surging Darius Morris this Lakers team is going to cause all types of problems for teams come playoff time. This Lakers team is already turning it around/ They are 4-1 since firing Mike Brown
All this screaming trade Pau Gasol, who do you get in return? Don’t say Josh Smith, he has been at the same plateau his whole career. You want to trade one of the top Power Forwards in the game today, for a player that disappears in the playoffs and never made an All Star team. There is only one player worth Pau Gasol and that’s Kevin Love. If Kevin Love is not in a trade for Pau Gasol, the Lakers shouldn’t move him. Without Pau Gasol they wouldn’t have won their franchises 15th, and 16th titles. It’s amazing how fans forget what he has recently done. Being a GM is hard you don’t make moves just for the sake of making moves. That’s what separates Championship Teams from the mediocre ones.
