What determines if a player is deserving of a new contract? What determines if a player should be traded? Is it talent or character? A mix of both?

After the boat trip of 2016, missing 12 games due to injury in the 2017 season, a video featuring blunts and cocaine, and a $15 million lawsuit over a fight… Odell Beckham Jr. apparently will not be playing football until he has a new contract. Based on this, some people may believe Odell does not deserve a new contract right now.

There is no argument about Beckham’s talent. In 2016 he became the fastest player to have 200 receptions and 4,000 receiving yards for his career. The 25 year old is one of the most talented wide receivers in the NFL and will be known as one of the all time best if his career stays on the trajectory it started off with.

According to a tweet from Ian Rapport, NFL Network Insider, “My understanding is that #Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr will not set foot on a field without a new contract extension agreed to – with the #Giants or any team. … This comes a day after owner John Mara said no one is “untouchable” in trade talks.”

It seems that the Giants feel like Odell needs to show them that he is going to work on his off the field issues and also show them that he can still produce the same on field talent that everyone was mesmerized by before the ankle injury.

I believe there is a good chance that is Odell does sign an extension before the season starts and will remain with the giants.

But….if he doesn’t where will he play? Will the Giants sign him and then trade him? Or will he have a say in the team he wants to be traded to?

Odell may be able to have his voice heard in a trade scenario because he holds the power of signing a new contract since no team will want him as a rental for this season so they would not trade for him without signing a contract.

The questions will remain and most likely grow as the offseason continues until one side budges and decides to bend without breaking. For now, we will all continue to speculate about the future of the New York Giants and Odell Beckham.
