Remember when EA Sports apparently had a jump on its basketball games and was starting to build confidence in them again? Well, apparently that was a short-lived thing, as NBA Live 20 doesn’t appear to be coming out anytime soon.

Based on this report from Polygon, EA Sports has confirmed that NBA Live 20 has been delayed. That means it’s not coming out in early September like last year’s NBA Live 19 did. Instead, it’ll come later in the year.

The company hasn’t been hyping the game that much, let alone mentioning its release this year. But it did list it on its schedule of its releases as early as May, indicating that another go around was expected. However, it appears that it’s pushed the game back, in the hopes of creating a real competitor to 2K Sports’ NBA 2K20.

An EA Sports representative told the website, “We’re planning a different approach to NBA Live this year, and will have more to share in the quarter ahead.”

Last year’s NBA Live 19 didn’t exactly do terrible, but it had trouble keeping up with the superior NBA 2K19, mainly because its mechanics just couldn’t keep up. That said, perhaps EA Sports is starting to figure out that it needs a whole new approach to stay in the game. Perhaps it’s time for the company to go back to basics and maybe go with an NBA Street-style approach? After all, that worked really well over a decade ago with NBA Street Homecourt on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and not so much with the sims that followed the years after. It wouldn’t hurt to take it back to the old school, guys.

NBA Live 20 currently doesn’t have a release date, but we’ll let you know as soon as we hear anything.
