Lovie Smith has fallen victim to Black Monday. He was fired today after the Bears finished the season (10-6) and missed the playoffs. The Chicago Bears started 7-1, but ended the season losing five of their last eight games. A season that started with promise ended meekly.
Chicago’s defense led the league in points. They had a record seven straight games with a defensive touchdown. The defense wasn’t their problem despite losing Brian Urlacher. The defense still had five pro bowlers not named Urlacher and Briggs.
Again it was a pourest offensive line that did the Bears in. Their offensive line is not where it should be. Matt Forte getting hurt didn’t help the cause. The Bears lack offensive weapons outside of Brandon Marshall and Matt Forte. Devin Hester hasn’t made strides as a receiver, Earl Bennett is inconsistent and Alshon Jeffery isn’t quite the compliment to Brandon Marshall, as some may think.
The Bears have reportedly reached out to the Denver Broncos about offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy. Mike McCoy has shown his value as a valuable offensive mind. He dealt with Kyle Orton, then he amazed everyone by changing a pro run offense to a college scheme to fit the skills of Tim Tebow. That’s a great accomplishment all in itself.
This year he changed his offense again for future first ballot hall of famer Peyton Manning. Peyton Manning coming off an 18 month absence and four neck surgeries. He helped Peyton have an MVP caliber season.
Peyton had a vintage season under McCoy. Manning, in his first year, shattered Broncos single season passing records. He completed 400 passes, threw for 4,659 yards 37 Touchdowns and a passer rating of 105.8. Not bad for a man that missed 18 months.
While Chicago is calling, Mike McCoy is preparing to try to help Denver win their third Super Bowl title. This was similar to the Gary Kubiak situation. The Chicago Bears would be lucky to have him. McCoy will make a decision as soon as the Broncos season ends.
