Latics stun Magpies
- Updated: April 28, 2012
Champions League chasing Newcastle United travelled to the DW Stadium to face relegation troubled Wigan Athletic in this afternoon’s Premier League clash. Coming off straight six wins Newcastle were big favourites to win however they were in for a shock against an inspired Wigan outfit.
Wigan took just 13 minutes to score Emerson Boyce crossing from the right for Victor Moses to head past Tim Krul. Just two minutes later Moses was at it again pouncing on a loose ball in the box to fire past a motionless Krul.
A clearly stunned Newcastle were now under heavy pressure and Wigan poured forward at every opportunity, forcing Newcastle into a tactical switch in defense., to no avail as it turned out. In the 36th minute a lay off from Jean Beasejour set Sean Maloney free and after beating Danny Simpson he slotted past Krul for a third Wigan goal.
Wigan’s great first half wasn’t finished yet though and three minutes into stoppage time Franco di Santo hit a magnificent long range looping shot past Krul and into the top left corner for a four-nil half time lead.
In the second half Newcastle played a lot better carving out several chances, Papiss Cisse forcing a good save from Wigan keeper Ali Al Habsi, then hitting the crossbar from a Davide Santon Cross. Hatem Ben Arfa dragged a shot just wide, before putting a great cross which Cisse headed against the post and back out but ultimately it was Wigan’s day as they held out for an important win and three points in their battle to avoid relegation.
