Keys to Andrew Luck’s First Season
- Updated: January 3, 2013
Any first overall pick faces a great challenge as their normally going to the worst team last year and at times like Luck are expected to turn the team around in one season. The 2-14 Colts selected Andrew Luck from Standford with the first overall pick in the 2012 draft. Luck is now in the playoffs in his rookie season turning the colts around to a 11-5 team after the departure of long time star Peyton Manning to Denver. Luck had four things that lead to his success in the 2012 regular season.
The first thing was simple; Luck is a talented natural born leading quarterback suited for the NFL. The next thing is that the Colts organization kept a good mix of established veterans and young players to gel with Luck this year. This allowed Luck to learn from experienced players as well as establish his own chemistry with guys that he will be teammates with the majority of his career. Robert Mathis, and Dwight Freeney are great defensive veterans to help Luck on the other side of the ball. Reason number three is Head Coach Chuck Pagano. Despite going through Leukemia treatment he remained the Colts head coach, symbol, and mentor for Luck.
The fourth and perhaps the most important reason to Luck’s success is elite wide receiver Reggie Wayne. Wayne was a great weapon to help the rookie feel more confident about his throws and a even better mentor when he makes mistakes. Wayne is the man that the team for now is built around and without him Luck may not be sitting in the playoffs right now. Colts fans will not forget their beloved Peyton Manning but their beloved Andrew Luck is beginning to climb up their favorite quarterback’s list.
