Justin Upton Would Fit With Detroit
- Updated: July 15, 2012
July 31 is the the trading deadline in Major League Baseball, and recently a big name has been put on the trading block, and his name is Justin Upton of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is quite an acquisition for any team, I’d say! Upton was the first overall pick of the coveted 2005 draft, one of the best drafts in the last decade, and was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He has a very impressive resume being a two-time All-Star (2009, 2011). Last season, Upton finished fourth in National League MVP voting with a .289 average, 31 home runs, and 88 RBIs. It is reported that the Diamondbacks are interested in a third baseman, shortstop, or top of the rotation starter. One team that could possibly be a suitor for Upton are the Detroit Tigers.
The Tigers’ prized prospect, Nick Castellanos, and the Futures Game MVP could be the key piece to a trade if the Tigers want to acquire Upton. Castellanos has the potential to be a future star in the league, and could be someone the Diamondbacks are interested in.
Some other top prospects would have to go, and possibly a pitcher in the Upton trade. Now that is quite a price, but the Tigers are all about now at this point, rather than the future. Upton would provide Detroit with another elite player and although they had a bumpy first half, they still can be considered World Series contenders, especially if a player like Upton is on the roster. Upton still has three years left on his contract, so the Tigers won’t have to worry about resigning him to a big contract just yet. If Detroit manages to acquire Upton, they will have a feared trio in Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, and Justin Upton.
