Flyers Win in OT! [Philly Sports Nut]
- Updated: April 11, 2012
Philly Sports Nut–
The Philadelphia Flyers refused to fold. Down 3-0 to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first period, the Flyers stormed back to tie the game in the third period and then win it in overtime. This was no repeat of the playoff game in 2000, when it took five overtimes to decide the game on the Keith Primeau goal. No, this was a quick kill, with Jakub Voracek scoring at 2:23 into the overtime period.
The Pens got out to an early lead with first-period goals from Sidney Crosby, Tyler Kennedy and Pascal Dupuis. The third goal by Dupuis was a tough for two reasons. First the play came from behind the net, the puck bounced around, and Ilya Bryzgalov had no idea what happened. Second, the refs missed an offside call, which should have negated the goal.
Fortunately, the Flyers kept fighting and this time the refs missed an offside on the Flyers. Danny Briere took a pass from Brayden Schenn, just after he crossed the blue line, and scored on a break-away at 6:22 of the second period.
The same pair teamed up for another Briere goal at 9:17 in the third. With their three goal lead down to one, the Pens were playing scared, very scared hockey. Then on their first and only power play of the game, the Flyers tied it up on a goal by Schenn.
In the overtime, the Flyers won several faceoffs and had the best of the play. Voracek snuck in behind Jordan Staal to tap a deflection into the right side of the net while Pen’s goalie Marc-Andre Fleury was sprawled on the other side. Read More.
