With the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft….

The Cleveland Browns hold the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, a year after they picked DE Myles Garrett with the first overall pick. Many analyst and fans are debating on who the Browns should select with the first pick. The Browns have had a hard time finding a franchise QB so many call for a signal caller to be drafted, but yet many fear they will just continue to be the place where QB’s go to die. History itself may be a good example to the Browns on what to look for at the first pick.

The first draft was held in 1936, and the Philadelphia Eagles selected Jay Berwanger out of the college of Chicago. The first handful of years seen running backs  get selected with the first pick, the first quarterback didn’t get pick at number one until 1944 when Boston Yanks selected Notre Dame Heisman winner Angelo Bertelli. The draft was allot different from 1947-1958 , when teams where randomly selected, sort of like the NBA lottery draft. It didn’t last long as by 1958 all 12 teams held the first overall pick.

When the AFL came to be it created a battle for college teams top players. Each league held its on draft , causing some players to get picked for both leagues. The bidding war for top players came to a hault when the leagues conducted a draft in which both leagues combined to form a common draft scenario in 1966. When the two leagues combined officially in 1970 the draft become known as what its referd to today as the NFL Draft.

There has been a total of 82 first round picks in the NFL with the first being RB Jay Berwanger and the last DE Myles Garrett last year. Out of the 82 player drafted , only 43 have made the pro bowl. Out of those 43 that made the Pro Bowl, only 12 reside in the Pro-Football hall of Fame. There have been 20 Heisman Winners picked with the first pick, with only 5 winning rookie of the year. The five that won are; RB Earl Campbell in 1978, RB Billy Sims in 1980, RB George Rogers in 1981, Qb Sam Bradford in 2010, and QB Cam Newton in 2011.

The Indianapolis Colts and Los Angeles Rams have held the first overall pick more than anyone. Both teams  having the pick a total of 7 times. Every team currently in the NFL have held the first pick at least once in there teams history. The current team picking at one, have picked a total of five times with the 1999 draft being the Browns rebirth, the expansion draft.

By position, QB has been picked the most with 31 QBs being picked , the last being Jared Goff in 2016. RBs have been picked 23 times with the last being in 1995 , RB Ki-Jana Carter. Myles Garrett was the picked just last year in 2017,  the most recent DL drafted, making there 15 picked altogether. Eric Fisher was the most recent OL in 2013 , making that number 7 picked at number 1. WR and LB have only had three apiece with the last picks being 1996 WR Keyshawn Johnson and 1988 and LB Aundray Bruce. There has been only one Db picked first overall, in 1956 being Gary Glick.

The college that has produced the most player at one  is tied between Notre Dame and USC. If the Browns draft Sam Darnold they could break that tie, giving them most players picked at one. Then again the Browns could go with Saquon Barkley and make the Penn State RB the first since another Nittany Lion was picked at one in 1995. The Browns have the first pick, and history will be made one way or another. Will Cleveland land the next Peyton ManningJohn Elway or Troy Aikman? Or will they draft the next Jamarcus Russell, David Carr or Tim Couch?

History isn’t on the Browns side with there only two QBS at number one overall with Tim Couch in 1999 and Bobby Garrett in 1954. Maybe 2018 is the year the Brownies bad QB mojo ends,  that is if they even take one.

Ladies and gentleman with the  First pick in the 2018 NFL Draft the Cleveland Browns select…
