Cowboys Apply Franchise Tag to Spencer
- Updated: March 6, 2013
With the deadline to apply the franchise tag ending today at four pm ET, many fans were wondering if the Cowboys would make use of the tag. If they were to use it, it was expected to be used on left outside linebacker Anthony Spencer. Well hours before the deadline, the Cowboys informed the league they would be using the tag on Spencer this year.
Spencer is coming off a great year including his first Pro Bowl appearance, leading the team in tackles and recording ten sacks right behind DeMarcus Ware who had eleven point five sacks. The team’s officials have announced that they are planning on working out a long term deal with Spencer before the deadline and if not this year, most certainty during next years off season.
If the two parties cannot reach a deal what does this mean for Spencer? Well, this means he will be making slightly fewer than six million dollars in the 2013-2014 season, which for a left outside linebacker/ left end is pretty good. Spencer and Ware are both switching to defensive end this year under the new 4-3 defense. It will be interesting to see how they perform this year at the position. Spencer will be looking for a long term deal and another dominant season.
*In other news, the Cowboys also cut starting safety Gerald Sensabaugh.
