A 22-year-old Chicago man’s interesting trip to the Upper Peninsula has been going viral as of lately.

The man, Tommy Mecher, of Jefferson Park, Ill., has been in the news as he was seen on social media and mentioned in WGN 9 Chicago’s story, traveling up to the western U.P. to Bessemer in his 2005 Chevy Malibu — with a snowmobile on top!

The video can be seen in one of the posts under the Facebook group, “Official Wisconsin Snowmobile Enthusiast Club.”

In the story from WGN, Mecher bought a used 1990 Polaris Indy 500 snowmobile and fixed it up before the trip. He also found an inexpensive idea of putting the snowmobile on the roof of the car to avoid the costs of renting a trailer to haul it.

Mecher made a support rack out of plywood and six straps, and he and his friend tested the idea by rocking the snowmobile back and forth. They also went on a test drive with it before they left as well.

Mecher told WGN that he never was concerned about his own safety and wasn’t pulled over in his journey by police officers, but he was stunned by how many drivers didn’t get into any type of trouble by taking pictures of them.

“That was the only thing that was dangerous,” Mecher said. “People trying to take pictures of me on the highway.”

He also said that the daring idea saved him a lot of money during his trip.

“In gas alone, I saved 100 bucks,” Mecher said.

Mecher eventually would leave his snowmobile on his father’s property, but he said that he definitely would haul it on top of his car again someday.
