Chelsea Win F.A. Cup
- Updated: May 5, 2012
The final of the oldest knock out competition in the World took place at Wembley today as Chelsea met Liverpool to determine who would hold aloft the famous old trophy.
The game started off tight with both teams neutralizing each other in midfield, the first real chance of the game came Chelsea’s way in the 11th minute and they converted it, a long ball from Juan Mata was picked up by Ramires who charged past defender Jose Enrique then fired past keeper Pepe Reina.
Other than that however the first half was a non-event, both teams cancelling each other out and there were no real chances of note.
The second half was just seven minutes old when Chelsea doubled their lead, a pass from Frank Lampard picked up in the box by Didier Drogba who hit a left foot shot past Reina to become the first player to score in four F.A. Cup finals.
This seemed to bring Liverpool to life along with the introduction of £ 35 million striker Andy Carroll from the bench, he immediately caused havoc and got Liverpool back into the game in the sixty fourth minute as he picked up a Stewart Downing pass then smashed the ball into the roof of the net past Peter Cech. In the eighty second minute Carroll thought he had equalized having a header saved on the line by Cech, which Liverpool thought had crossed the line however replays showed that the officials had made the correct decision in not allowing the goal.
Despite a spirited effort from Liverpool, Chelsea were able to weather out the last minutes and win the game 2-1 allowing captain John Terry to step forward and hold aloft the famous trophy.
