Buccaneers Hold on to Lavonte David with 5 year Extension

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed to terms with All-Pro Linebacker Lavonte David on a five-year extension, NFL Media’s Rand Getlin reported Sunday, via a source who had seen the deal. The Buccaneers would later come out to acknowledge and confirm the agreement.

The agreement will give the all important linebacker a well deserved $50.25 million with $25.56 million guaranteed(some could argue he was a bit under payed), NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per agent Ron Butler. The contract was also confirmed to include certain incentives that could hike the earned money to around 54 million Butler relayed to rappaport.

This payday coming no less than within a week of All-Pro Deandre Levy receiving his payday from the Detroit Lions.

In late July it was reported by getlin that the 2 sides had been in “active negations” since way back at a point before the draft, the two sides were clearly adamant to get a deal done.

The 2nd rounder was easily one of the most underpaid players in the NFL, but only due to the fact he was entering the final year of his rookie deal.

His deal trumps Levy’s four-year, $33.72 pact, which makes David the highest-paid 4-3 linebacker in the game. In fact, David’s annual average of $10.05 million is behind only Justin Houston, Clay Matthews, Ryan Kerrigan and Bobby Wagner among all NFL linebackers.

In my opinion David is definitely worth the investment, leading all Tampa Bay defensive players by a long shot at an outstanding 110 tackles last season.

With the tandem of him and DT Gerald McCoy the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the ground work layed for a defense that they’ll eventually be able to hang there hat on, and one that should help rookie prize Jamies Winston develop into a franchise caliber quarterback.
