Brewers extend Gomez

Carlos Gomez makes an outstanding catch against the Cardinals

The Milwaukee Brewers have extended outfielder Carlos Gomez  through the 2016 season. He will be making $4.3 million in 2013 but his new extension will pay him $7 million in 2014, $8 million in 2015, and $9 million in 2016. His deal is worth a total of $24 million.

The speedy outfielder was set to test the free agent market at season’s end, before agreeing to terms on this contract on Wednesday. He will patrol the outfield with Ryan Braun and Norichika Aoki. Gomez’s primary position is in center field. In 2012, Gomez enjoyed his best season in the major leagues. Although he played in just 137 games, he hit a .260 with 19 home runs and stole 27 bases, all career-highs. He also drove in 51 runs and had an on-base percentage of .305.

Before playing for Milwaukee, Gomez played for the Mets and Twins. After being traded once again, Gomez found a home in Milwaukee, where he normally came off the bench. Doug Melvin and the Brewers made a wise decision locking up the Dominican Republic native. Not only have they signed a superb fielder, but also a future superstar.  The 27-year old is still developing his power and is one of the few players in baseball which can hit the ball out of the ballpark and is also a threat on the base pads.
