Okay.. I typed up a blog less than an hour ago about how Kristaps Porzingis left the Knicks meeting earlier today and asked for a trade.. Well the trade has already gone through as the New York Knicks have traded Porzingis to the Dallas Mavericks.
The Mavericks have agreed to take on the contracts of Tim Hardaway Jr. and Courtney Lee to facilitate a Porzingis trade and are working to complete the transaction today, league sources say.
The Knicks will receive Dennis Smith Jr. and the expiring contracts of DeAndre Jordan and Wes Matthews in the proposed trade, according to league sources.
The Knicks will also receive future first-round draft compensation from the Mavericks and, by shedding the contracts of Hardaway and Lee, create the salary-cap space this summer to pursue two maximum contract free agents.
The trade will give the Knicks the salary cap space needed to pursue two star players in a summer where Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and more big names could be hitting the open market. The deal also allows the Mavericks to part ways with Dennis Smith Jr.
Mavericks are 23-27 and outside the playoff picture in the Western Conference, but pairing Porzingis with Luka Doncic gives them two young players who can become the cornerstone of their franchise. Mark Cuban and Dirk have to be happy right now.
