Blood on the Dance Floor
- Updated: May 2, 2012
Amare Stoudemire is a talented power forward in the NBA. Some would argue he is the best. Others will argue he is a talent on the floor but a cancer in the locker room. The biggest question is…will he ever win a championship?
Stoudemire seemed like he was set up for success when he signed with Phoenix Suns. It was a young team with a veteran point guard, and a young innovative coach. The dynamic between Stoudemire, Steve Nash and Mike D’antoni seemed to be the road to a championship.
Low and behold Rumors out of Phoenix started to surface that Stoudemire wanted certain players traded. First, it was Quentin Richardson for taking to many ill-advised shots. Then it was Joe Johnson for taking too many shots in general. Then it was Shawn Marion just because he didn’t like him. All these players were traded for one reason or another. Finally, the Suns could no longer afford Stoudemire.
Enter the New York Knicks. They had the money for Amare and one other superstar, PLUS they had the coach the Amare thrived under in Phoenix.
The Knicks bought into Amare and they also sent 5 players to the Denver Nuggets to acquire Carmelo Anthony. On paper, the Knicks looked like they were on their way back to the Championship. The Knicks soon found out that they didn’t have a great point guard to run D’antoni’s system. They acquired Jeremy Lin and it looked promising until an ACL injury. Jeremy Lin’s injury was the beginning of the end for D’antoni. And it also looks like the beginning of the end of the Amare and Melo show.
In their second loss to the Miami Heat, the Knicks were dominated for the second time. Amare showed to be himself again complaining that Anthony was shooting too much, citing Melo’s 29 shots to his 9 shots. In a fit of rage after the game Amare punches glass that encases a fire extinguisher and cuts his hand severely. So severely in fact, that he is probably out for the rest of the season.
There is no room for temper tantrums for grown men, especially considering Stoudemire is out for the rest of the series. New York fans and media are in an uproar, as they should be. Apologies have come out of the Stoudemire camp but the damage has been done. The more important issue is if Melo and Amare can’t work this out then which team will Amare ruin next?
