The race for the starting quarterback at Oklahoma has been won by Texas Tech transfer Baker Mayfield as he was chosen over Trevor Knight and Cody Thomas. Mayfield, the Big 12 newcomer of the year in 2013 at Texas Tech,  transferred to OU last summer as Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury didn’t offer him a scholarship after he started 7 games for the Red Raiders that year.    With the season about to start and online betting taking off, now is the time to place your wagers. He missed the last part of 2013 from injuries and moved to Oklahoma and walked-on for the Sooners. Some say a major reason was that his girlfriend was  and still is a student at OU.  Without the scholarship, left Lubbock.  He could be the starter for OU for three years.  Knight, a junior, will backup Mayfield and Thomas, who started the final four games for OU in 2014 as Knight was shelved with injuries, will run third team. Thomas is a red-shirt sophomore.
Mayfield grew up a Sooner fan even though he lived his early years in an up-scale suburb of Austin, Texas, attending high school in the area.  He led Lake Travis High School to a state championship. He is familiar with the new system Assistant Coach Lincoln Riley put in this summer and pre-season camp. The schemes are the same the have been handed down from Mike Leach, former OU Offensive Coordinator, Texas Tech Head Coach, and the current Head man at Washington State. Riley ran the system at Tech as a qb under Leach and was successful the past three years at East Carolina Univ.
Mayfield is considered a “gunslinger” type signal caller, going for the big play, putting the ball into tight situations.  A deceptive runner with average speed, OU will only run the quarterbacks this year in scramble situations.
