Anthony Spencer: Great Things to Come?
- Updated: January 25, 2013
Anthony Spencer had everything to prove heading into the 2012 season. He was franchised tagged at the beginning to the dismay of many fans, feeling he was a bust and it was time to cut their losses. The 26th overall pick the 2007 draft was at best an average player being paid like an above average one.
At the beginning of the preseason, Spencer promised he would finally deliver for Dallas and finally did not disappoint. He was named to his first Pro Bowl this year as an injury replacement for Green Bay’s Clay Matthews. Even though he missed two games, he recorded his first double-digit sack season with 11, had 27 quarterback hurries, led the Cowboys with 95 tackles, and was the only player in the NFL with 90 plus tackles and ten-plus sacks.
With the 2013 off season upcoming and Spencer proving he deserves it, Dallas fans can expect Jerry Jones to resign the young man to a long term deal with a healthy signing bonus. There will be a new challenge for Spencer and Ware alike this year, with the new defensive scheme that will require them both to switch to defensive end.
Spencer says he is willing and eager to play the position. Dallas fans hope to see more out of Spencer for years to come, and maybe one day in the Dallas Cowboy’s Ring of honor. For now enjoy your first trip to the Pro Bowl, Mister Spencer.
