A Manic Monday in the Windy City. Chicago Bears hire Chiefs OC Matt Nagy as head coach

The Chicago Bears have spent the last 3 NFL seasons in the basement of the NFC North. They have endured double digit losses in all three of those years. This season, they tripped and stumbled amidst a boatload of injuries to a mediocre 5-11 finish.

They lost WR’s Cameron Meredith and Kevin White in the preseason and veteran starting tight end Zach Miller suffered one of the most gruesome leg injuries ever in a Week 9 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Plus, a myriad of other injuries rocked this team over the course of the season.

They are a team with quite a bit of talent still, nonetheless. They have a game changing running back in Jordan Howard, a good offensive line, and a young quarterback who they’ve invested quite a lot in in former North Carolina tar heel Mitchell Trubisky.

Yet, the Chicago Bears were one of the least successful offensive teams in all of the league in 2017. They averaged only 16.5 points per outing (29th in the NFL), 287.4 total yards per game (30th in the NFL), and were dead last in passing yards a game at a measly clip of 176 yards per outing.

Looking to get the best out of his team’s floundering offense in a hurry, Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace quickly zeroed in on Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as an option for his young football team moving forward.

Today, he made the hire official and Nagy became the 16th head coach in Chicago Bears franchise history.

His work with Alex Smith and taking over play calling duties for Andy Reid late in the season did not go unnoticed as he becomes the 2nd new head coach hiring in the NFL behind Jon Gruden.

Nagy has been linked to many teams, including the Cleveland Browns and the Indianapolis Colts. However, Ryan Pace was is no waiting mood whatsoever and pounced on the opportunity to get the guy that he thought would be the best option.

The 39 year old Nagy has been in the NFL as an assistant since 2008 with the Philadelphia Eagles under current Chiefs coach Andy Reid. He had a decent career in the Arena Football League with the New York Dragons, Georgia Force, Carolina Cobras and the Columbus Destroyers.

This was a very logical hire for the Chicago Bears. They get a young, hungry offensive mind who can grow and perfect his craft as the team does the same. Not to mention, 2nd year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is now expected to make considerable jumps as well as the offense.

The 39-year old offensive guru will have his hands full, however as he looks to mirror the successes of Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams. 2018 should be an interesting and hopefully for the Chicago Bears and their fan base, refreshing year. Stay tuned and Bear down!
