Shields dominates, Royals shutout Rays 6-0
The Kansas City Royals defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 6-0 this evening at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.
Tonight was all about James Shields. The veteran right hander made his first start at Tropicana Field since being traded by the Rays in 2012, and he came out motivated. Shields allowed just 3 hits over 7 dominant innings of scoreless baseball, while striking out 10. Jake Odorizzi was excellent as well for Tampa Bay, but hit a bit of a bump in the 3rd. Alex Gordon smacked an RBI single, and another run scored on Omar Infante‘s RBI ground out. Odorizzi locked in after that. He allowed just the two runs over 6 innings pitched, while striking out 8 batters. Kansas City tacked on 4 more late runs on Juan Carlos Oviedo, and that support would be plenty for Shields and company. The Royals won, 6-0.
* This was Tampa Bay’s first shutout loss since June 18th against Baltimore.
* Wade Davis, also acquired by KC in the Shields’ trade, pitched a scoreless relief inning against his former team.
