Phillies (8-10) vs. Dodgers (12-7) preview

Monday 4/21/14 at 7:10 PM (PST)

Lee (2-2, 4.00 ERA) vs. Maholm (0-1, 4.97 ERA)

Cliff Lee can be the best in baseball and  to others he is an enigma. This year, in 4 starts he is looking like the former. Lee’s first start of the season he was knocked around for 11 H and 8 ER, 1 SO, 1 BB and came away with a win. 3 starts later he goes 9.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 13 SO and 1 BB for a CG loss. He has been pitching much better than that first game. Then again, he is an enigma in the sport of Baseball

Maholm was slotted to be a fifth/sixth starter. He hasn’t looked close to good in the very few 12.2 IP. His 4.97 ERA was given a boost when he pitched 1.2 scoreless innings. Outside of that, Paul’s line looks like this; 14 H, 7 ER. 2 HR, 4 SO, 5 BB, 1.500 WHIP and  hitter are batting .286 against him in less than 15 IP.

Tuesday 4/22/14 at 7:10 PM (PST)

Burnett (0-1, 2.74 ERA) vs. Ryu (3-1, 1.93 ERA)

Burnett has only looked “bad” in a single game for the 2014 season. He gave up 5 H, 8 R and 4 ER in 5.2 IP. Other than that the season has looked as good as it did last year when he was with the Pirates. He has 23 IP, 20 H, 7 ER, 15 SO and 16 BB with a 1.570 WHIP.

Ryu has actually looked fantastic in 2014. His ERA doesn’t do him justice with his line looking like this; 5 GS, 28 IP, 19 H, 5 ER, 25 SO, 9 BB, 1.000 WHIP and hitters are hitting a minuscule .186 against him.

Wednesday 4/23/14 at 7:10 PM (PST)

Hamels vs. Greinke (3-0, 2.42 ERA)

Hamels has not pitched in the 2014 season and didn’t look great in 2013; 33 GS, 8 W, 3.60 ERA, 220 IP, 205 H, 88 ER, 202 SO, 50 BB, and a 1.141 WHIP

Greinke has not given up more than 2 ER in his last 4 starts, SO at least 5 batters and walking no more than 2 a game. His pitch counts have been very high. In 22.1 IP he has made 396 pitches. All while holding batters to a .221 BA.

Thursday 4/24/14 at 7:10 PM (PST)

Kendrick (0-2, 3.60 ERA) vs. Haren (3-0, 2.16 ERA)

Kendrick has had little to no offense behind him. The team has scored a total of 12 runs in his 4 starts.  While opposing teams have scored 20 runs and only 10 of them were ER given up by Kendrick himself. He is pitching pretty well in 2014 going; 25 IP. 26 H, 13 R, 17 SO, 6 BB, a 1.2800 WHIP and a .260 BA against.

Haren has looked more like a 1, 2 or 3 slot guy in 2014. His W/L and ERA look great and his line looks just as good. 4 GS, 25 IP, 23 H, 6 ER, 20 SO, 2 BB, a 1.000 WHIP and hitters are batting .240 against him.

The one headline coming into the series is the probable return of Cole Hamels for his first game of the 2014 regular season. Hamels didn’t look like the World Series winning Hamels in 2013, but 2014 is a fresh start for the young 30-year-old in the prime of his career.

(EDIT) Dodgers call up Jose Dominguez (he is eligible to play 4/21/14) from Triple A and Option Chone Figgins to Albuquerque.

The Phillies have been dominate over the Dodgers since 2008, especially in postseason play. No matter the W/L record for the Phillies, when they play the Dodgers or the Dodgers are in town, all bets are off. This should be a great series against 2 teams who don’t like each other very much.

Both teams are on a winning streak of sorts and look to keep it that way. Though the Dodgers look to stay on top of the NL west and the Phillies look to climb the ladder of the NL east.

The series looks to favor the Los Angeles Dodgers, but don’t count the Philadelphia Phillies out in the underrated NL rivalry.

Series prediction: The two teams should split the series at 2 a piece.

Win loss, ERA, BA and every other stat line seems to be tossed to the way side when these two teams go head to head. Look for lopsided and/or 1 run games in this 4 game series and head down to the stadium for a the delicious Philly Cheese steak hot dog whilst the 4 game series is underway.
