The Detroit Lions have re-signed veteran cornerback Rashean Mathis to a 1-year contract as Adam Schefter reported earlier today. The Lions had signed Mathis late in training camp last season and he turned out to be a solid signing starting 13 of his 15 games played and recording 44 tackles.
The 11-year veteran has 505 tackles in his career as a cornerback, although he has played a bit at safety. He has intercepted 30 passes in his career and has converted 3 of them into pick-sixes.
He will most likely be the Lions starting right corner back with Chris Houston expected to be the starting cornerback on the left side. This is a smart move by the Lions to re-sign a veteran who can be not only a productive player, but also a mentor to the younger players on the roster.
