New Orleans, LA - The New Orleans Hornets have seen a much improved Anthony Davis this season, which they were hoping to see. He is in his second season, but spent most of his rookie year either injured or recovering from injury. With his stellar play this season, the question becomes how good can Davis become?
Currently, he is averaging 20.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 4.0 blocks per game which are extremely impressive numbers. He has shown a much improved mid-range game offensively and his athleticism and quick first step give him an advantage on most centers in the NBA. His defense has been great for New Orleans as well, although that has always been an expected part of his game.
“I mean, he’s the franchise. He’s that guy. He’s the go-to guy, and everybody here knows it.” - Jrue Holiday on Anthony Davis
Those numbers that he has been putting up each and every night are among some of the NBA’s best numbers for a center, especially at his age. That being said, there are still ways that he can improve his game. While he is a big man, he still needs to work on his court vision and ability to pass the basketball to get his teammates more involved. As he continues to score the basketball at the level that he has been, opposing defenses will continue to crack down on him. Once that happens, he’ll need to pass the basketball out to teammates spotting up and also make solid interior passes as well.
Overall, the verdict has to be that Davis has a chance to become a superstar. He was drafted with the #1 overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft and many doubted whether or not he’d be able to live up to the hype that many expected from him. He obviously has decided that he will work as hard as possible to reach his full potential and the Hornets are reaping the benefits of that decision. Expect to see Davis continually be a top big man in the league for years to come.
