How Good is Demar DeRozan?

Toronto, ON - The Toronto Raptors have been a lot more successful early this season than many expected, and one of the main reasons for their competitiveness is shooting guard Demar DeRozan. DeRozan is finally beginning to break out in his fifth NBA season and is bringing up the question of just how good he can become. Is he the kind of player who will turn into a star? Is he just a good scorer?

Through 12 games this season, DeRozan is averaging 21.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. He has shown a much improved all-around offensive games, especially from behind the three-point line. There are obvious areas that he needs to improve in, but for the most part he is on the right track to become a great, consistent scorer.

One area that he needs to improve in would be his ability to be a playmaker for his teammates. While he’s able to score the basketball and create his own shot, he’ll never be able to become the “star” that he’s more than capable of becoming. His offensive game will be much easier as well when opposing defenses have to respect the fact that he could make passes to his teammates for easy looks.

Another area that he needs to become more consistent in is his defense. DeRozan has freakish athleticism and could become one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA, but he seems to lose focus at times. He is currently averaging 1.2 steals per game, but with his quickness and athleticism he could easily up that number to around 2.0 steals per game. The Raptors struggle a bit defensively and DeRozan stepping up to be a lockdown defensive option could be a huge addition to their ability to compete this season.

The future is extremely bright for DeRozan, as is the present. He’s currently known as a very dangerous scorer who can score from anywhere on the floor. There aren’t many defenders who are going to be able stop him completely, but he’s still at the point where he can be contained. If he’s able to improve his playmaking ability and force opponents to respect that area of his game, he will be much more difficult to beat. His potential is certainly bright as well, with the ability to become a star in the NBA. The Raptors and their fans have every reason to be very excited with what the future has to offer with DeRozan continually improving his game.
