Urlacher, Singletary, Butkus…Who was the best?
- Updated: May 28, 2013
The Chicago Bears are a team known for defense. Ever since I can remember, the Bears have lived off their tremendous defense and their even more outstanding individual defensive players.
The Bears have had seven defensive players inducted into the Hall of Fame, headlined by Dick Butkus, Bill George, Dan Hampton and Mike Singletary. Three out of the four players I just named were linebackers, but the two that really stick out are Mike Singletary and Dick Butkus. I think it’s fair to say that the Chicago Bears are known for breeding Hall of Fame linebackers.
This year the Bears had another great linebacker retire, Brian Urlacher. Urlacher should, and will, be a first round Hall of Famer, that’s not the question here. The questions is… Is Brian Urlacher the best linebacker in the history of the Chicago Bears franchise?
I’m going to give you some career stats for the three of them and see which one you believe is the Bears best linebacker ever.
Dick Butkus (1965-1973):
8 Pro Bowl selections
6 First Team All Pro selections
2 NFL Defensive Player of Year awards
1960′s & 1970′s All Decade Team
Rated #10 NFL Player of all Time
1,020 tackles, 22 interceptions
Hall of Fame 1979
Mike Singletary (1981-1992):
10 Pro Bowl slections
8 first team All Pro selections
1980′s All Decade Team
2 NFL Defensive Play of the Year awards
1,488 tackles, 19 sacks, 7 interceptions
1998 Hall of Fame
Brian Urlacher (2000-2013):
8 Pro Bowls
5 All-Pro Selections
1 Defensive Player Of The Year
Defensive Rookie Of The Year
Named to the 2000′s All Decade Team
Bears record for most tackles in a season (153)
Bears all time tackle leader (1,779 tackles)
41.5 sacks, 22 interceptions
All of those numbers and accomplishments are incredibly impressive. When thinking about this answer, I want you to factor in the time of which they played, the players they had to compete against and overall, who you think finished their career with the most impressive stats.
Those are three of the greatest linebackers of all time. Now it’s your turn to decide, who was the best?
