Mariners add slugger to the lineup

by Jesus Martinez | Posted on Thursday, January 17th, 2013
As the Seattle Mariners go into the 2013 season needing much help in their lineup, they might have just found what they are looking for. Wednesday night, the Mariners were in a three-way trade which shipped slugger Michael Morse from the Washington Nationals  to Seattle, also sending catcher John Jaso from Seattle to Oakland. Washington also aquired A.J. Cole, he was with the organization a few years ago.
Morse was a .291 batter last season with 18 home runs and 62 RBI’s, but was cut short of the season due to an injury playing mostly the outfield throughout the season. The 30-year old slugger was with the Mariners prior to playing in Washington playing from 2005-08 before being traded to the Nationals for Ryan Langerhans in June of 2009. With the addition of Morse, the Nationals are forced to play him at first base since they have already signed outfielder Denard Span in the offseason.
The Seattle Mariners are coming of a season where they finished 3rd in the AL west for the third straight season, also ranked 27th out of 30 teams in runs with 619. They were also last in in slugging percentage  and on field percentage, and 19th in home runs (149).
