Giants Add Linebacker Keith Rivers [New York Sports Nut]
New York Sports Nut–
While the last few off-seasons for the New York Giants have been quiet ones, Giants fans should be pleased with the addition of linebacker Keith Rivers. The internet had been abuzz with rumors for hours preceding the trade that landed Rivers in Giant blue.
The Giants have developed a knack for adding less-flashy players than their co-tenants at MetLife stadium. While the horses they bring in may not have the hype, they have fit into the Giant way of doing things and developed into impact players. Players like Michael Boley, Antrelle Rolle, and even Kareem McKenzie have gone to the Giants and helped solidify what is usually a solid all-around team.
Rivers, who missed the entire 2011 campaign due to injury, is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Big Blue sent a 5th round pick to Cincinnati in exchange for Rivers and are hopeful that he can provide some much needed help rejuvenating what was a flawed linebacking corps last season.
Personally, I believe that the Rivers trade has far too much upside to pass up. Rivers should come in extremely motivated to prove his health and cash in on his second NFL contract next off-season. Rivers should provide the Giants with much better play than could be expected of their fifth round selection.
Even if Rivers opts to sign with a different team following this year, the Giants will still have gotten one year of play from a former top ten overall selection. Additionally, he will have bought them time to find a more permanent solution at a position that was in need of an upgrade. Should Rivers walk, the Giants will have had the opportunity to develop a suitable replacement from within the organization, look outside the organization during free agency next year, or possibly add one through the draft.
